In a world where everything old is new again and bands are remaking old albums with new members (Ace Frehley was right!) Rush continues to kick and scream at the door of the Progressive future.
Caravan begins with the tolling of a bell and leads us into some of the hardest riffs and beats that the boys from the north have produced in years. Not since A Farewell to Kings have I heard this kind of true aggression in their music. Alex's guitar grinds to keep counterpoint with Neal's beats. Geddy's bass drives home a thunder that brings chills to the skin and makes me think of the glory days of old. A set of tight lyric's that could find a home on 2112 wrap the whole package together.
Next up, BU2B jumps out of the monitors and demands our attention. As with Caravan, Alex continues to assault us with heavy riffs. (Is there a more underrated guitar player in all of music?) Geddy's bass drives an up and down rhythm that is pulled by Neal's explosive beats. At :38 seconds is the first chord change that lets us know this is not just some simple song with extended riffs and jams. Unlike the lyrics on Caravan, BU2B explores inside a mans beliefs and how to relate them to the world around him.
I must admit I didn't know what to expect from Rush when I purchased this single. The last few years have seen some very up and down music from one of the last, great Progressive bands left from the old school. I was pleasantly surprised and think anyone who purchases this single will be too.
Good job guys!
